For decades, fans and critics have debated the perfect way for a wrestling legend to retire. Whether it’s Sting bowing out victorious in AEW or John Cena “giving up” to Gunther to signal the end of an era, every exit is scrutinized. For The Undertaker, his final bow came under the most unusual circumstances imaginable: a cinematic “Boneyard Match” at WrestleMania 36, performed in front of zero fans due to the global pandemic.
Despite the lack of a live audience, “The Deadman” views the match against AJ Styles as the perfect conclusion to his 30-year run. Speaking on a recent episode of his Six Feet Under podcast, with Styles as the guest, Calaway opened up about the specific moment reality set in. After burying Styles and filming the final scene where he rode off on his motorcycle, the adrenaline faded, and clarity arrived with the sunrise.
“When I rode off, it was – I don’t know – maybe 45 minutes until the sun started peaking through. 3:30 [or] 4 in the morning is when it dawned on me that this was pretty much it for me. My body – although I was in shape, it was very apparent to me. It was somewhere in those early morning hours that I realized that this was gonna be it. I think it was meant to be.”
AJ Styles, who had the honor of being Taker’s final opponent, agreed that the cinematic nature of the bout offered a fitting send-off that a traditional match might have lacked during the COVID-19 era.
“As bad as it was, COVID and what not, you literally rode off. That’s the way you go out, right there.”
While he didn’t get the roar of 80,000 people, The Undertaker’s realization in the quiet hours of the morning allowed him to close the book on his career with peace, leaving behind a legacy that—much like the character—will never truly rest in peace.
