WWE Women’s World Champion Stephanie Vaquer has been visibly struggling in recent weeks, but it isn’t just part of the show. “La Primera” is currently recovering from a legitimate ankle injury that has required her to wear support during her television appearances. The situation has been exacerbated on-screen by her arch-rival Raquel Rodriguez, who has targeted the injury in consecutive weeks with brutal attacks involving steel chairs and title belts.
Despite the physical setback and the on-screen beatdowns, fans of the champion can breathe a sigh of relief regarding her reign. Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select has confirmed that Vaquer is not expected to relinquish the gold.
“As of this past week, there was no plan for Stephanie to vacate the title. In fact, there were tentative creative plans for her next defense—which, I mean, they’re setting up an angle with Raquel Rodriguez… She sustained an ankle sprain and needed a walking boot. She was always cleared for contact, but obviously wrestling on that is a bad idea. So, unless something catastrophic has happened, she’s not vacating the title.”
WWE appears to be using the injury to add heat to the feud with Rodriguez, turning a real-life sprain into a key storytelling element as Vaquer fights to hold onto her championship.
