The clock is ticking on the legendary career of AJ Styles. The former WWE World Champion announced in mid-2025 that 2026 would be his final year as an active professional wrestler, bringing an end to a journey that began back in 1998. As “The Phenomenal One” navigates his final lap, WWE Chief Content Officer Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque has revealed that Styles is playing a major role in shaping his goodbye.
AJ Styles Creating List Of Opponents He Wants To Face
During a recent appearance on ESPN’s Unsportsmanlike podcast, Triple H shared insight into the collaboration between management and the retiring star. “He has a lot of goals and a lot of people — I know he’s with me every week making a list of people that he would want to face and that he wants to meet in the ring before he retires,” Levesque stated. This confirms that Styles is actively hand-picking the opponents he wishes to work with before hanging up his boots for good.
However, there is a very real possibility that Styles never gets to complete that list. While the plan is for a year-long farewell tour, his career could come to a screeching halt in a matter of days. This Saturday at the Royal Rumble in Riyadh, Styles will face Gunther in a match with the highest stakes imaginable. If Styles loses, he will be forced to retire immediately, cutting his final year short. Fans will be watching with bated breath to see if the farewell tour continues or if “The Ring General” shuts it down before it truly begins.
