It remains one of the most controversial booking decisions in recent memory: Kofi Kingston’s magical WWE Championship reign ending in just seven seconds at the hands of Brock Lesnar. Years later, Kingston is opening up about that fateful night on the premiere of Friday Night SmackDown on FOX. Speaking on the Cheap Heat podcast, the New Day member described the experience as a “very weird day.”
Kingston: “There Were Many Different Ways Or Alternatives To It”
“No, no, no, no. That’s not what I wanted,” Kingston admitted regarding the squash match. He revealed that there were other options on the table. “When I was told this is kind of what was gonna happen, there was a lot of — many different ways or alternatives to it.” Ultimately, however, he viewed it as a professional obligation. “We present what we’re supposed to present… It’s our job as performers to complete that task.”
Despite the crushing defeat, Kingston found solace in the fan outrage that followed. “I’m glad that people cared. If people didn’t care, there would have been a problem… it felt good that people cared about the way that things were executed.”
