Real recognize real. Shortly after AJ Styles’ legendary career came to a close at the hands of Gunther at the Royal Rumble, his greatest rival took to social media to pay his respects. John Cena, who famously feuded with Styles from 2016 to 2018, posted a heartfelt tribute to the man who pushed him to his limits.
Cena: “Few Are More Worthy Of Universal Respect”
“Phenomenal is an understatement. Respect is earned and few are more worthy of universal industry wide respect than @AJStylesOrg,” Cena wrote on Twitter. “Thank you AJ for all you’ve done for wrestling. From anyone who’s seen you and those lucky enough to share canvas with you.”
The tribute carries extra weight given the circumstances. Styles lost via submission to Gunther’s sleeper hold, a eerily similar finish to Cena’s own retirement match against Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event just last month. While Cena’s tap-out was controversial due to his “Never Give Up” motto, Styles went out on his shield, passing out in the hold. With both men now retired by “The Ring General,” their shared history remains one of the defining chapters of modern WWE.
