In a surprising move, WWE has announced that the dream match between Becky Lynch and AJ Lee for the Women’s Intercontinental Championship will take place at Elimination Chamber on February 28. The match was made official on Raw after Lee returned to save Maxxine Dupri, only to be goaded into a title fight by Lynch.
While some fans fear this means the match is being scrapped from the “Grandest Stage of Them All,” Dave Meltzer reports that the plan is still for the two to clash at WrestleMania 42. “I was told there’s a reason it’s here and the story goes until Mania,” Meltzer said on Wrestling Observer Radio. “Whatever this plan is today probably won’t be changed.”
The decision to accelerate the feud reportedly comes as Paul “Triple H” Levesque looks to shake up the card due to disappointment over WrestleMania ticket sales. By booking a high-profile bout for Elimination Chamber, WWE hopes to drive interest while building a longer-term narrative that culminates in Las Vegas.
