Cody Rhodes’ path to WrestleMania 42 hit a detour at the Royal Rumble when he was eliminated by Drew McIntyre, failing to secure the victory for a third time. Now, “The American Nightmare” must fight his way into the Elimination Chamber to earn his shot at the gold. According to WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray, this setback presents a perfect opportunity for Rhodes to evolve his character.
“I’d Like A Little More Raw, Edgy, Gritty Look”
Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Bully Ray expressed a desire to see a less polished version of Cody, drawing a direct comparison to his legendary father, “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes. “I always loved Dusty looking like a dishevelled mess. With the jeans on and the rock n’ roll t-shirt kind of half tucked in… it looks like he had on the suit from the day before and went to the strip club and slept in the suit,” Ray explained colorfully.
While acknowledging that Cody’s current “polished” presentation has worked wonders, Ray believes the business should take a visible toll on him. “I’d like a little bit of a more raw, edgy, gritty look. And if this is what Cody is evolving into or morphing into, I don’t have a problem with that because the wrestling business can get to you.”
Fueling The Feud With McIntyre
Bully Ray hopes that the ongoing rivalry with Drew McIntyre—who eliminated Rhodes despite not even being in the Rumble match—will be the catalyst for this change. “I still think Cody is playing angry a little bit. I look forward to the day that we’re getting the true anger, the true hatred, the true vitriol out of Cody. He’s on his way there, maybe this thing against Drew can get him there even more.”
With the Elimination Chamber qualifier set for next week’s SmackDown, fans will soon see if Rhodes adopts this grittier edge as he attempts to punch his ticket to the main event of WrestleMania 42.
