The relationship between CM Punk and WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque has been one of the most fascinating narratives in professional wrestling history. While the two have seemingly mended fences to do business in the modern era—with Punk currently reigning as the World Heavyweight Champion in 2026—old stories of their turbulent past continue to surface. During a recent episode of his Kliq This podcast, WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Nash peeled back the curtain on a specific incident from the early 2010s that allegedly derailed a planned program between himself and the “Second City Saint.”
According to Nash, the original creative direction called for him to wrestle CM Punk after costing him the WWE Championship. However, those plans were abruptly scrapped after Punk made an unscripted remark on live television that crossed a line with Levesque. Nash revealed that the comment involved Stephanie McMahon, and it infuriated her husband to the point where he inserted himself into the match instead.
“When I was supposed to wrestle CM Punk after I cost him the belt, he said something that p***** off Paul about something with him and Stephanie. And it wasn’t on script. And it p***** Paul off,” Nash explained. He described Levesque’s reaction backstage as legitimate anger rather than a worked wrestling promo. “Paul came back and basically said, ‘You’re not wrestling Punk. I am. I’m beating that m**********.’ He was that hot… And it wasn’t like Paul being a character—it was like, ‘Oh, OK, m**********. You want to pull them out and measure them? Here we go. S*** on that.’”
Nash used the story to highlight the reality of the wrestling business: money heals all wounds. He noted that despite the intense heat that existed over a decade ago, both men were able to put their egos aside for the greater good of the business today. “I know how much Paul cares for him now. And what it took to bring him back. That relationship is real… You can have that kind of f’ing heat with somebody ten years ago… but man, when you gotta make money and make music together—f’ing how quickly that dissolves.”
Nash also addressed his own infamous promo exchange with Punk, where Punk notably mocked Nash for clicking his knees. Contrary to popular belief, Nash insisted he holds no grudge over the verbal jousting. Instead, his issue lies with Punk’s decision to leave the company in 2014. “The one thing CM Punk did that Kevin Nash could never forgive him… Where his heat with me is, he left ten f****** years of huge money on the floor. That’s my heat,” Nash stated passionately.
He elaborated on his philosophy of the business, emphasizing that maximizing earnings is the ultimate goal. “I don’t give a f*** what you do in f****** wrestling… Two things are real – f****** money and the miles. It ain’t miles and money. Money and miles. You ain’t doing no miles if there ain’t no money. When Roman [Reigns] said to him, ‘You took your ball and went home for ten years.’ Done.”
With CM Punk now firmly back in the fold and holding the top prize on Raw, these stories serve as a reminder of how far the relationship between the two parties has come. As Punk prepares for his main event showdown with Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 42, it is clear that the “money” finally outweighed the “heat.”
