WWE Shows Interest In Former NJPW Star David Finlay

Major updates have surfaced regarding the professional wrestling future of 32-year-old David Finlay. The established star is currently navigating the open market, and several top promotions are closely monitoring his status. Both WWE and NJPW are heavily rumored to be interested in securing his services for the foreseeable future.

Following a successful and lengthy run with NJPW, Finlay is now officially a free agent. It was previously reported that his contract with the Japanese promotion expired last month. This development immediately sparked rumors about WWE having heavy interest in bringing him into their locker room.

According to a recent update from Fightful Select, there has indeed been contact between Finlay and WWE. The report cited sources confirming the communication, although it noted that he is not currently “factored in to creative plans.” This suggests that while discussions have occurred, no imminent debut has been penned into the television scripts.

The publication also noted that they have not heard any recent updates regarding further negotiations between the two sides. However, the initial contact confirms that WWE views him as a valuable asset. Meanwhile, it was stated that NJPW is actively trying to re-sign the former IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion to a new deal.

Finlay received a formal farewell from the Japanese audience at the NJPW New Beginning event in Osaka on February 10, 2026. He competed against Callum Newman and ultimately suffered a defeat. That bout currently stands as his final match for NJPW as he weighs his career options.

Finlay originally joined NJPW back in 2015 and remained fiercely loyal to the promotion for nearly a decade. During his tenure, he captured multiple championships and actively participated in several high-profile feuds that defined his career. He evolved into a formidable heel and a key player in the main event scene.

His experience extends beyond the rings of Japan as well. He previously crossed over to wrestle on AEW Dynamite, where he competed in a notable match against Adam Page. This diverse background makes him an appealing prospect for any major wrestling organization looking to bolster its roster with reliable talent.

As Finlay decides on his next career move, his former promotion is preparing for its next major international event. NJPW will present The New Beginning USA on February 27, 2026, streaming live from the CURE Insurance Arena in Trenton, New Jersey. The event will showcase the current roster as the company moves forward into the spring season.
