Original WWE WrestleMania 42 Main Event Revealed

The “Grandest Stage of Them All” is officially moving in a new direction following a series of significant backstage developments. According to a report from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE management originally had a very different vision for the top of the WrestleMania 42 card. At one point, a massive Hell in a Cell match featuring Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Championship was reportedly “heavily discussed” as the definitive conclusion to their trilogy.

The decision to pivot away from the Rhodes versus Reigns III concept was triggered by a chain reaction of events, primarily starting with a major injury to Seth “Freakin” Rollins. Rollins suffered a torn rotator cuff during a physical encounter at Crown Jewel, which forced him to vacate the World Heavyweight Championship and derailed his planned high-profile programs for the spring season.

Following the Rollins injury, management took another look at the “Rumble-to-Mania” direction. Reports suggest that Paul “Triple H” Levesque grew concerned about potential “audience fatigue” regarding a third Rhodes and Reigns encounter in four years. This led to the shocking decision in January to have Drew McIntyre defeat Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed Title on an episode of Friday Night SmackDown, effectively resetting the championship landscape.

“The way it was explained is that Paul Levesque took another look… and decided that doing a Rhodes vs. Reigns match for the third time… would lead to audience fatigue,” the Observer report detailed. This shift allowed the company to explore fresh matchups, ultimately leading to Roman Reigns winning the Royal Rumble and choosing to challenge CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Title instead.

While the Hell in a Cell structure was briefly considered for a McIntyre versus Rhodes rematch, the company eventually settled on the “Legacy” story between Rhodes and Randy Orton. Rhodes reclaimed his title from McIntyre in Portland last week, securing his fourth consecutive WrestleMania main event. Meanwhile, McIntyre is now expected to transition into a personal grudge match against the “Samoan Werewolf” Jacob Fatu.

WrestleMania 42 will take place on Saturday, April 18, and Sunday, April 19, 2026, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Despite the cancellation of the originally planned cell match, the card remains stacked with marquee attractions. The WWE fans in the Nevada desert are prepared for a “bell-to-bell” masterpiece as the American Nightmare looks to solidify his third reign against the 14-time world champion. Rollins, who is currently back in training, is targeting a return to the broadcasts in the coming weeks to address his own unfinished business with The Vision.
