The landscape of the WrestleMania 42 card underwent a massive transformation due to an unfortunate medical emergency behind the scenes. According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, a significant injury to Bronson Reed was the “clincher” that forced officials to finalize two of the show’s biggest singles matches earlier than originally intended. While Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton was always the long-term goal, it was not initially slated to headline the Las Vegas event.
“The Bronson Reed injury for whatever reason was the clincher of the idea to go with Rhodes vs. Orton and McIntyre vs. Fatu in singles matches,” Meltzer noted. Originally, the company had planned for Rhodes to engage in a major program with Orton after WrestleMania, potentially starting at the May Premium Live Event. However, with Reed sidelined and unavailable for his original creative direction, management chose to accelerate the “Legacy” rivalry to ensure a high-stakes main event for Allegiant Stadium.
