WWE WrestleMania 42 Rumored Match Is Not Happening

A significant shift has occurred in one of WWE‘s most unique ongoing storylines. The anticipated mask versus mask match between El Grande Americano and the Original El Grande Americano will not be taking place at WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas — it is instead being saved for an AAA event, according to Bryan Alvarez on Wrestling Observer Live on March 31.

Alvarez was direct about the change in direction. “What happened to El Grande Americano vs. Original El Grande Americano at WrestleMania 42? Well, apparently the El Grande vs. El Grande match is going to happen for AAA. They’ve got a date booked for that match, so they’re not doing a mask vs. mask match between those two guys at WrestleMania — they’re saving that for AAA.”

Chad Gable’s El Grande Americano Rivalry With Ludwig Kaiser Now Heading to AAA Rather Than WrestleMania 42

The development is a notable reversal given how deliberately WWE had been building toward the rivalry in recent weeks. The storyline has been one of the more creative and layered feuds on WWE programming, with Chad Gable returning as the Original El Grande Americano to challenge Ludwig Kaiser’s version of the character — a feud built around identity, legitimacy, and masked luchador tradition. The mask versus mask stipulation carried significant cultural weight and many fans expected it to be resolved on the grandest stage of the year.

Moving the match to AAA rather than WrestleMania 42 makes sense from a cross-promotional standpoint given the ongoing relationship between WWE and the Mexican promotion, and could allow the match to be presented in front of an audience with a deeper cultural connection to the lucha libre mask tradition. According to Alvarez, AAA already has a date booked for the bout, suggesting the plans are concrete rather than speculative.
