The Randy Orton mystery phone call storyline has now seen two of its biggest rumored names eliminated from contention. Vince McMahon was previously dismissed as a possibility, and now Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has also been denied as the answer by sources within WWE.
“While Dwayne Johnson fits the bill and would be the biggest addition for a show that is behind on ticket sales, those in the company have denied the name to us,” Meltzer reported. He did add that WWE has a name identified internally. “My impression is they have a name that at least those in the inner circle are aware of. They could still be working them but they are not of that impression.”
WWE’s Original Choice for Randy Orton’s Mystery Caller Fell Through Before a New Name Was Chosen
The storyline began on the March 16 Raw when Orton was first shown speaking with an unknown person, with the implication being that this caller helped push him back toward a more ruthless mindset following his heel turn on Cody Rhodes. Bryan Alvarez previously reported that WWE’s original planned choice for the caller was unexpected but that the deal ultimately fell through, forcing the company to change direction. With McMahon and The Rock both now off the table and a reveal expected on the April 3 SmackDown, the identity of Orton’s mystery caller remains one of the most genuinely unpredictable reveals on the road to WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas.
