Major changes are rippling through the AEW main event scene following a significant injury to one of its top stars. According to new reports from Fightful Select, former AEW World Champion Samoa Joe is currently in concussion protocol. The injury, described as a “non-contact” issue sustained prior to last week’s Dynamite, has left Joe sidelined with no confirmed timetable for a return.
Andrade El Idolo Slots Into Main Event Picture
For months, Joe was reportedly “factored in to the top of the card programs,” specifically revolving around the AEW World Championship. However, his sudden absence necessitated a pivot. Andrade El Idolo has been the beneficiary of this shift, stepping into the plans originally designed for Joe. AEW officials are reportedly thrilled with El Idolo’s recent performances, including his victory over Swerve Strickland on January 28 and his win against Kenny Omega on February 4.
El Idolo is now set to face “Hangman” Adam Page at AEW Grand Slam: Australia, with the winner earning a shot at the World Title against either MJF or Brody King.
HOOK Takes Lead of “The Opps”
Joe’s injury has also shaken up the faction dynamic. With the “Samoan Submission Machine” out of action, HOOK has stepped up as the new leader of “The Opps,” commanding Katsuyori Shibata as his second-in-command. Joe’s last match was on January 21 against Mike Bailey.
