The rivalry between AJ Styles and CM Punk spans decades and multiple promotions, including WWE, TNA, and ROH. While their on-screen battles are legendary, their real-life relationship has been equally complicated. Ahead of his retirement at the Royal Rumble, Styles challenged Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship on the January 26 episode of Monday Night Raw. Following his defeat, Styles opened up about the significance of sharing the ring with his long-time rival one final time.
In the recently released “AJ Styles’ farewell tour: WWE Vlog,” The Phenomenal One spoke candidly to the camera about his personal history with The Second City Saint. He admitted that a miscommunication had led to real-life heat between the two, a situation that weighed heavily on him. “I don’t think he understands how much it means to me because we had some rough times, him and I. It really bothered me because we were so close at one point,” Styles confessed. He noted that they “got caught up in [their] bubbles,” leading to an unfortunate fallout.
However, Styles used the moment to emphasize the importance of forgiveness and moving past petty grievances. “We are living proof that live and learn, forget, forgive, move on, life’s too short to be angry with each other over stupid things,” he stated. He acknowledged that while they may not see eye-to-eye on everything, they can remain friends and appreciate one another. “Me and Punk don’t think a lot of the same things but that doesn’t separate us from being friends and being appreciative of each other.”
Styles concluded his thoughts by expressing profound gratitude for their final encounter in Canada, putting a peaceful bow on a relationship that has defined much of his career. “We both said things in the past that we wish we could take back. With that being said, I’m so thankful for that match tonight.”
