The World Heavyweight Championship was officially on the line at the WWE Elimination Chamber premium live event. Defending champion CM Punk stepped into the squared circle against Finn Balor to settle their ongoing rivalry. The championship bout took place at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois, giving the champion a distinct hometown advantage.
Both competitors started the contest with a very technical approach. They exchanged traditional wrestling holds and grappled on the mat to set an early pace. However, the technical showcase quickly devolved into an all-out brawl as tempers flared between the two men.
Balor began specifically working over the midsection of his opponent. The heel challenger utilized focused strikes and submission holds to wear down the champion. Punk eventually managed to create some distance by tossing Balor over the top rope and down to the arena floor.
Capitalizing on the opening, Punk launched himself through the ropes to hit a diving attack on the outside. The momentum continuously shifted back and forth as both men traded offensive maneuvers inside the ring. Punk eventually ascended the turnbuckles and attempted to execute a suplex from the middle rope.
Balor countered the dangerous attempt and forcefully knocked Punk off his perch. Despite the setback, Punk managed to recover and landed a standing elbow drop on his challenger. The champion suffered a noticeably bloody nose during this chaotic sequence of moves.
The challenger nearly secured the victory after delivering his signature Coup de Grace from the top rope. Punk somehow survived the pinfall attempt and immediately hoisted Balor onto his shoulders. He connected with the GTS, but before he could finalize the pin, the crafty challenger rolled out of the ring to safety.
The action spilled back to the outside area where Balor hit a Slingblade on the exposed floor. Balor then delivered a running dropkick that sent Punk crashing directly through the ringside barricade. The challenger dragged the broken champion back inside the ring and attempted a series of consecutive Coup de Grace maneuvers.
Punk successfully blocked the second diving attempt and immediately locked Balor into a Sharpshooter submission hold. The Chicago WWE fans cheered loudly as Balor desperately crawled across the canvas. He finally managed to grab the bottom rope to force a mandatory referee break.
Following the rope break, Punk once again hoisted the exhausted challenger onto his shoulders. He delivered a definitive GTS and covered his opponent for the three-count. The referee officially signaled for the bell, allowing Punk to successfully retain his World Heavyweight Championship as the hometown babyface celebrated.
With this victory, the champion has officially secured his spot in the main event of WrestleMania 42. He will defend the World Heavyweight Championship against Roman Reigns, who previously won the 2026 Men’s Royal Rumble match. The two megastars are officially scheduled to collide at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas this April to determine the undisputed face of the Raw brand.
