WWE Hall of Famer Road Dogg, real name Brian James, has officially left the company today. Industry reports from PWInsider indicate that James made the personal decision to step down from his high-level position on the creative team. He had been a primary fixture of the SmackDown brand for several years.
Sources close to the situation suggest that his departure marks the end of a decade-long tenure in various backstage and executive roles. James originally joined the backstage fold in 2014 and quickly ascended the ranks due to his sharp mind for the professional wrestling business. He has served as the co-lead writer for Friday Night SmackDown over the last year.
His career path within the promotion has seen him hold several major titles across different brands. He previously served as the head writer for the blue brand before transitioning to a pivotal role at the Performance Center in 2019. In that capacity, he assisted with the creative development of NXT during its transition to a live television format.
Following a brief release from his contract in early 2022, he returned to the organization later that year. He took on an executive capacity under the leadership of his longtime friend and colleague, Triple H. His exit now leaves a significant opening in the leadership hierarchy of the Friday night program.
The departure of Road Dogg comes as the company undergoes a series of major shakeups in the creative department. Alexandra Williams recently announced through a public update on LinkedIn that she has been promoted to Vice President and Lead Writer for Monday Night Raw. This move places her in charge of the flagship program’s long-term direction.
Williams previously served as a senior writer and producer, where she was credited with some of the most successful segments in recent memory. She notably produced CM Punk’s acclaimed “State of the Union” promo and contributed to John Cena’s historic retirement tour. She will now oversee all creative development for one of cable television’s longest-running shows.
“As VP and Lead Writer for WWE’s flagship live program, I oversee all creative development for Monday Night RAW,” Williams shared. She highlighted her role in collaborating with executive leadership and a cross-functional team to execute complex character arcs and premium live event builds.
The restructuring of the writing team follows a period of internal adjustments aimed at building momentum for the 2026 season. The creative department is currently focused on the final build toward WrestleMania 42, which takes place on April 18 and 19 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Williams will be a key figure in finalizing the card, while the SmackDown team must now find a replacement for James as they approach the spring stadium spectacle.
