Backstage Update On Road Dogg’s WWE Departure

WWE Hall of Famer “Road Dogg” Brian James officially left the company on Thursday. Reports from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter indicate that he made the decision to leave his position on the creative team after receiving his annual performance review. The word making the rounds internally is that James was unhappy with the specific feedback provided during that review.

James chose to resign from his prominent role as co-lead writer for the SmackDown brand. He originally returned to the organization in 2014 and has been a fixture of the creative process for over a decade. While his departure is described as a personal decision, it has reportedly been brewing for some time behind the scenes.

The exit coincides with broader shifts in the company’s writing structure as the road to WrestleMania 42 accelerates. Amidst the news of James’ departure, another major shift has been confirmed for the flagship program. Alexandra Williams announced via LinkedIn on March 5 that she has been promoted to Vice President and Lead Writer for Monday Night Raw.

Williams previously served as a senior writer and producer for the brand. She will now oversee the entire creative development for the show as it continues its successful run on Netflix. She is now part of a leadership trio that includes Ryan Ward and Jonathan Baeckstrom, reporting directly to Triple H and the executive board.

“As VP and Lead Writer for WWE’s flagship live program, I oversee all creative development for Monday Night RAW,” Williams shared. She noted the importance of the program as one of the highest-rated weekly shows on television. The new structure is designed to streamline the creative agenda for both primary brands.

Ryan Ward has reportedly transitioned into a central role overseeing the direction for both Raw and SmackDown. Williams and Baeckstrom will continue to co-lead the red brand to maintain its current momentum. On the blue brand, John Swikata remains as a lead voice following the exit of Brian James this week.

Interestingly, James had reportedly been planning to attend a wrestling convention later this month. That appearance was initially approved by management before the approval was rescinded shortly before his official resignation. This internal friction may have contributed to the timing of his departure from the active writing staff.

The new creative team is now focused on finalizing the card for the Las Vegas stadium show on April 18 and 19. WrestleMania 42 will feature massive matches like CM Punk defending the World Heavyweight Championship and Randy Orton challenging for the Undisputed WWE Championship. The transition in leadership comes at a pivotal time for the company as they aim to deliver a historic weekend for the WWE fans.
