John Cena noticed the fans noticed — and he’s ready to set the record straight. Speaking at MEGACon Orlando, Cena addressed the fact that he wore the same wristbands and armbands at his final WWE match against GUNTHER at Saturday Night’s Main Event that he had previously worn at SummerSlam. Despite what fans may have assumed was a meaningful callback, Cena said it was purely accidental.
“Great catch. The reason is it was a mistake,” Cena said candidly. “The person who drops the uniform in my dressing room, the merchandise guys, they dropped the SummerSlam wristbands in the room, and admittedly, that was a bit of a busy day for me. There were a lot of folks there. There were a lot of guests. I was doing meet and greets throughout the day. I didn’t really have a lot of time to sit and reflect.” He admitted he simply assumed the colors matched and didn’t examine them closely enough. “There is no way someone would give me a set of old wristbands to wear out there — and lo and behold, here we are.”
Cena Takes the Learning Experience in Stride
Rather than trying to retroactively assign deeper meaning to the mix-up, Cena was straightforward about what it taught him. “I guess my takeaway is details do matter. So that’s my learning experience.” It’s a rare look at how even the most prepared performers in WWE can have something slip through the cracks on one of the biggest nights of their career.
