The upcoming “Career Threatening Match” between Gunther and AJ Styles at the Royal Rumble has the wrestling world divided. While many fans are hoping for a miracle victory for “The Phenomenal One” to extend his career, WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray is taking a much more ruthless stance. Speaking on a recent episode of the Busted Open Radio podcast, Bully Ray broke down why this weekend is the perfect time for Gunther to end Styles’ career permanently.
Bully Ray: Gunther Needs To Force The Universe To Say Goodbye
Bully Ray argued that the emotional weight of retiring a legend is exactly what Gunther needs to ascend to the next level of super-villainy. “The table is set for Gunther to drive the stake through the heart of the entire WWE Universe,” Bully said. He used visceral imagery to describe the potential outcome, stating, “If Gunther defeats AJ Styles at the Royal Rumble, that’s like Gunther looking at the WWE Universe and plunging the knife in… I don’t think the WWE Universe is ready to say goodbye to AJ Styles, and I think Gunther is going to force them to say goodbye.”
The Hall of Famer also pushed back against the idea of Styles having a long, drawn-out retirement run similar to John Cena. He reasoned that if everyone gets a farewell tour, it devalues the concept. “If everybody else gets a farewell tour, then John Cena’s farewell tour is not special,” he noted. “The only thing that should be on the agenda is keeping Gunther strong. That’s it.”
Ultimately, Bully Ray believes that Styles has accomplished everything possible in the industry and does not need another championship run to validate his legacy. “I don’t give a **** if AJ Styles wins a championship again. I’m not interested,” he bluntly stated. “I’m more interested in AJ going out in a manner that catapults Gunther to the next level.” Come Saturday in Saudi Arabia, fans will find out if Gunther is ready to plunge the knife.
