The illustrious career of one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time has come to a heartbreaking end. In the emotional high point of the 2026 Royal Rumble in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Gunther defeated AJ Styles in a “Career Threatening Match.” As per the stipulation, “The Phenomenal One” must now retire from active competition, closing the book on a journey that began in 1998 and spanned every major promotion in the world.
Gunther Survives Styles Clash And 450 Splash
The match lived up to the immense pressure surrounding it, with the Riyadh crowd firmly behind Styles from the opening bell. The action started fast, with Styles catching the “Ring General” with a dropkick that sent the fans into a frenzy. However, the tide turned when the fight spilled to the floor, allowing Gunther to initiate a brutal beatdown that left Styles with a visible cut on his left forearm. Despite the damage, Styles fought back valiantly, landing a series of kicks and a neckbreaker for a near fall.
Styles came agonizingly close to victory multiple times. After escaping a sleeper hold and hitting a springboard forearm to the outside, he brought the action back into the ring.
