Roman Reigns made history on Saturday in Riyadh, becoming a two-time Royal Rumble winner by last eliminating Gunther. The victory secured “The Tribal Chief” a championship match at WrestleMania 42, and reports regarding his opponent have already surfaced. According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, the current plan is for Reigns to challenge CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
Reigns vs. Punk And Rhodes vs. McIntyre Headline WrestleMania Plans
If the plan holds, this will mark the first televised singles match between Reigns and Punk since January 2014. While the two icons faced off in a Triple Threat match involving Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 41, a one-on-one showdown for a world title is a fresh marquee attraction for the “Show of Shows.”
On the other side of the bracket, the Undisputed WWE Championship picture is also taking shape. The current schedule lists Drew McIntyre defending his title against Cody Rhodes. However, the report notes a potential twist: the dangerous Jacob Fatu could be added to the mix to transform the bout into a Triple Threat match. Interestingly, Meltzer noted that the original plan for the event was to have Cody Rhodes face Roman Reigns for the third time in four years. However, WWE officials decided to scrap those plans after revisiting the matchup at Survivor Series, opting instead for fresh directions for both top stars.
With WrestleMania 42 set for April 18 and 19 in Las Vegas, the card is beginning to look stacked. Reigns vs. Punk represents a clash of generations and ideologies, while Rhodes continuing his story against McIntyre ensures that the top of the card remains as volatile as ever.
