With the WWE Championship now around the waist of Drew McIntyre, the creative team is working to finalize the main event of WrestleMania 42. The controversial finish to the “Three Stages of Hell” match on SmackDown—where Jacob Fatu’s interference cost Cody Rhodes the title—has opened up multiple narrative paths. According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestleing Observer Newsletter, the company has narrowed its focus to two specific scenarios for the top title bout.
The report indicates that the internal debate is between a traditional singles rematch and a more chaotic triple threat encounter involving “The Samoan Werewolf.”
“The two ideas for Mania at this point are a three-way for the title with Rhodes, Fatu and McIntyre, or just McIntyre vs. Rhodes. The straight match is easier because there has to be a single winner at the Rumble and at the Chamber… so Rhodes winning the Chamber (could be Rumble but my gut is Chamber makes the most sense) would get him in. There are always ways to get Fatu in if need be.”
The inclusion of Jacob Fatu in the conversation highlights his rapid ascent to the main event scene. His involvement would add a fresh dynamic to the Rhodes vs. McIntyre rivalry, protecting both established stars while elevating a new monster heel. With the Royal Rumble just weeks away, the outcome of the 30-man match will likely serve as the first major domino to fall. If Rhodes does not win the Rumble, the Elimination Chamber in February becomes the likely battleground where he—or Fatu—will punch their ticket to the main event.
