WWE Shakes Up Creative Teams For Raw And SmackDown Following Fan Criticism

WWE has reportedly implemented significant changes to its creative structure following a period of vocal criticism from the fanbase. In recent months, the company has faced backlash regarding the handling of several key storylines, most notably John Cena’s retirement run. It appears these negative reviews have prompted a reaction behind the scenes, leading to a reshuffling of the writing teams for both flagship shows.

According to a new report from PWInsider, the company has made adjustments to its leadership hierarchy. Vice President of Creative Writing Ryan Ward is now overseeing the creative agenda for both Monday Night Raw and Friday Night SmackDown. Ward, a veteran of the creative team known for his acclaimed work during the “Golden Era” of NXT, will now have a broader influence on the direction of the main roster product.

Road Dogg And John Swikata To Lead SmackDown Creative

Underneath Ward, the specific brand leadership has also been adjusted. The report notes that WWE Hall of Famer Road Dogg (Brian James) is now sharing the responsibility of co-lead writer for SmackDown alongside John Swikata. Road Dogg has been a fixture backstage for years, often serving as a key producer and creative voice, while Swikata has been rising through the ranks. The duo will be tasked with steering the blue brand as it heads toward the Royal Rumble and beyond.

CM Punk Writer Alexandra Williams Promoted On Raw

On the red brand, a similar co-lead structure has been established. Alexandra Williams and Jonathan Baeckstrom have been named as the leads for Raw. Williams is a particularly interesting name in this role, as she has reportedly worked closely with CM Punk since the “Best in the World” returned to the company, helping to craft his segments and storylines. Baeckstrom brings his own experience to the table, having previously served as the lead writer for 205 Live.

It remains unknown if these structural changes are directly related to the rumors of WWE overhauling the creative plans for WrestleMania 42. Those reports surfaced right before Drew McIntyre shocked the world by defeating Cody Rhodes for the WWE Title, a move that seemingly upended the expected card. With new creative voices in charge, fans will be watching closely to see if the tone of the shows shifts in the coming weeks.
