CM Punk is heading home to Chicago for Elimination Chamber, and he’s doing it with the opponent of his choice. On the February 9 episode of Raw, a World Heavyweight Championship match was made official between Punk and Finn Balor for the February 28 event. According to a new report, this booking decision came directly from the champ himself.
During the Self Made Session on February 9, it was revealed that WWE booked the match because Punk personally wanted to work with Balor. “Expect this month to mainly be focused on Finn Bálor… He’s working Bálor again mainly because he likes working Finn Bálor and has wanted to work Finn for some time,” the report stated.
The on-screen setup saw Balor interrupt Michael Cole to storm the ring, claiming he knows Punk is injured because he is the one who hurt him. Balor demanded the shot to prevent Roman Reigns from “stealing his kill” at WrestleMania 42. Despite General Manager Adam Pearce attempting to cancel the match to protect the WrestleMania main event, Punk accepted the challenge, setting the stage for a blockbuster showdown at the United Center.
