Dave Meltzer Disputes Rusev’s Claims Regarding AEW Departure

Rusev recently shared his personal reasons for leaving All Elite Wrestling and making his highly anticipated return to WWE. However, a new report from a prominent wrestling journalist is calling his official explanation into question. The conflicting stories have generated significant debate among wrestling fans.

During a recent appearance on Chris Van Vliet’s “Insight” podcast, the former United States Champion discussed his career trajectory. He said he decided to exit AEW in 2025 because he wanted more opportunities to compete in the ring. He claimed that he deeply missed the grind of a full-time wrestling schedule.

Rusev spoke fondly of the demanding travel routine associated with WWE, including European tours and the week-to-week rhythm of performing in different cities. He stated, “I wanted to wrestle. I wanted to mix it up with the best.” However, that specific version of events has since been directly challenged by an industry insider.

During the latest edition of “Wrestling Observer Radio,” Dave Meltzer disputed the idea that limited in-ring opportunities were the driving force behind Rusev’s departure. Meltzer reported that the central issue was actually Rusev’s reluctance to lose matches. He claims this stubbornness ultimately led to AEW pulling him from television broadcasts entirely.

Meltzer did not hold back in his assessment of the situation. “You’ve got to be kidding me. The whole problem he had in AEW was he didn’t wanna’ lose so they stopped booking him,” Meltzer stated. He then criticized the backstage culture within Tony Khan’s promotion.

“The thing with Tony is, you can negotiate with him but there’s a certain point you can’t cross. These guys aren’t gonna’ say that to Levesque [Triple H]. They try to take advantage of Tony. They don’t respect him like they respect Levesque,” Meltzer argued.

The stark difference in management styles seemingly influenced Rusev’s decision to return to a more structured environment. Rusev is now back under the WWE umbrella, where the creative hierarchy is firmly established. He will have to earn his spot on the card against a deeply talented roster of performers.

The current WWE locker room is highly competitive as the road to Las Vegas continues. The superstars are preparing for the upcoming Elimination Chamber premium live event on February 28, 2026, in Chicago. The show will feature two massive steel structure matches that will finalize the championship picture for WrestleMania 42 in April.
