Will the “Harbinger of Fury” finally capture the ultimate prize in professional wrestling as the road to WrestleMania 42 reaches its boiling point? Aleister Black, the former NXT Champion, has been a central figure on Friday Night SmackDown since making his surprising return to WWE in April 2025. After being released from his contract in June 2021, Black spent several years in AEW under the moniker Malakai Black before his contract expired early last year, allowing him to step back into the rings that first brought him international fame. His return has reignited discussions about his legacy and whether he can surpass the heights of his initial undefeated streak.
In a candid interview with Forbes, Black opened up about his current mindset and his unrelenting drive to reach the top of the mountain. While some critics and fans have suggested that a veteran might be satisfied with a comfortable spot on the roster, Black dismissed any notion of settling for mediocrity. He described his philosophy as a constant pursuit of the most prestigious goals available in the industry, regardless of the obstacles in his way.
“It’s never not been the direction that I wanted to go – it’s always aiming for the highest and trying to grab the highest apple on the tree, because that’s what you want,” Black said during the interview. He elaborated on this by noting that a lack of ambition is detrimental to any performer’s career. “Any wrestler in any capacity, in any standard shoot, if you’re not in it for the highest part, then I feel like you’re going to be content with lesser. For certain people that might be good. For myself, I can’t. I always have to push towards the highest thing that I can get in with or without the help.”
The conversation also touched on how the audience perceives him today compared to his dominant run in NXT between 2017 and 2019. For many, that era remains the definitive version of the character, marked by his dark aesthetic and devastating Black Mass finishing move. However, Black views his current run as a more mature and strategically focused version of that persona. He acknowledges the history but refuses to let it define his current ceiling as a SmackDown superstar.
Black’s return on the April 25, 2025, episode of SmackDown saw him immediately target The Miz, signaling that he was ready to compete with the established names of the brand. Since then, he has participated in high-stakes matches, including qualifiers for major events, proving that his athleticism remains at a peak level despite the physical toll of his decades-long career. His focus on mental control and maturity has allowed him to navigate the high-pressure environment of the main roster with more clarity than during his first stint.
One of the most intriguing developments since his return has been his recent interaction with “The Viper” Randy Orton. The two recently shared the ring on SmackDown, sparking immediate rumors of a potential feud heading into the “Showcase of the Immortals.” Addressing this during his conversation with Forbes, Black didn’t shy away from the prospect of facing one of the most decorated champions in the history of the business. Such a rivalry would serve as the perfect platform for Black to prove he belongs in the same conversation as the legends of the industry.
“I always have to push towards the highest thing that I can get in with or without the help,” Black reiterated, hinting that a confrontation with a star like Orton is exactly the kind of “highest apple” he is looking to grab. With Orton currently enjoying a resurgence and eyeing the Undisputed WWE Championship himself, the collision between the Viper’s RKO and Black’s unorthodox striking has the potential to be a marquee attraction for the Las Vegas spectacle.
