Cody Rhodes Discusses Backstage Politics

Every professional wrestling company has its own set of unique backstage issues, and WWE is no different. With superstars from across the entire globe working together, one can imagine that conversations aren’t always the smoothest. However, the current era’s roster members may have figured out a way to keep the politics away.

During a recent episode of the What Do You Want To Talk About? podcast, Cody Rhodes opened up about the locker room situation. The American Nightmare revealed that right now, his peers are much more straightforward and honest. They prefer to voice their opinions about a storyline directly rather than creating a manipulative environment.

However, seasoned wrestlers also know when someone is not being completely genuine with their opinion. Rhodes appreciates the honesty that exists among the top stars in the company today. He believes it leads to a much healthier creative process for everyone involved.

“One of the great things about you as a peer in the locker room is that you’re straight up. I think a lot of guys in our locker room are straight up,” Rhodes explained during the broadcast.

He noted that the talent feels comfortable sharing their thoughts with the producers and management. This open dialogue allows the best ideas to rise to the top for the benefit of the WWE fans.

“They’ll say, ‘This is what I think is better, this is what I think isn’t. Let’s talk about it.’ Then someone makes the final decision, but at least the opinions have been weighed,” he added.

Rhodes has spent years in the industry and can easily identify when someone is trying to play political games. He values authenticity over everything else when it comes to professional collaboration.

“Because you can smell it when you get around the ones who say, ‘This is going to be really good for you,’ and you can tell — no, it’s not,” Rhodes stated candidly.

He often finds that these types of disingenuous comments are actually self-serving for the person making them. He is glad that the current culture encourages a much more direct approach.

“I can tell it’s not even really for me,” he concluded about those specific types of interactions.

Currently, Rhodes is booked for a massive Undisputed WWE Championship match against Drew McIntyre for Friday Night SmackDown. He is set to receive a major title opportunity on this week’s episode of the blue brand. If he is successful, he will move on to defend the championship against Randy Orton at WrestleMania 42. The two-night stadium show takes place in Las Vegas, Nevada, on April 18 and 19. The locker room will need to maintain this positive environment as the pressure of the Showcase of the Immortals begins to mount.
