A new report has officially emerged on David Finlay’s decision to choose All Elite Wrestling over previous rumors about a WWE run. The former NJPW standout recently shocked the professional wrestling world when he joined the promotion on the March 4 episode of Dynamite. His arrival has immediately bolstered the roster with another top-tier athlete.
Shortly after his high-profile Dynamite appearance, a report from BodySlam shared more context on the situation. It was noted that the second-generation star refused to join WWE after being offered a lower-level contract. The offer was reportedly for him to start within the NXT developmental system rather than the main roster.
This specific detail prompted the 32-year-old to agree to a deal with Tony Khan’s promotion within the last week. He clearly felt that his experience and track record warranted a more prominent position than a developmental role. The decision allows him to maintain his status as a major player on the national stage.
Shortly after his debut and a physical reunion with Clark Connors and Gabe Kidd, Finlay was officially announced as All Elite. While it was previously speculated that he might join the Stamford-based organization, reports soon emerged that management there did not factor him into their current creative plans. This led to a swift negotiation with the Jacksonville-based company.
Fightful Select previously reported that Finlay has signed a multi-year deal with All Elite Wrestling. He has now formally reunited with Kidd and Connors to form a dangerous group known as The Dogs. This faction is expected to make waves in the tag team and trios divisions in the coming months.
Finlay’s previous contract with New Japan Pro-Wrestling officially expired in February. However, he continued to work through his remaining commitments, including last weekend’s New Beginning USA event. He brings a wealth of international experience to the locker room during a very busy time for the company.
The Dogs are expected to be featured prominently as the road to AEW Revolution continues. The pay-per-view is scheduled for March 15 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. While the group is not currently booked for a match on the show, their presence will undoubtedly be felt as they look to establish their dominance over the rest of the roster.
The addition of Finlay comes as AEW continues to aggressively sign top talent from around the globe. The company recently celebrated the arrival of other international stars to bolster their diverse lineup. Management is currently focused on providing a strong alternative for fans looking for hard-hitting, athletic competition on weekly television.
