The industry veteran is officially weighing in on the recent leadership shakeup behind the scenes. Following the departure of Brian “Road Dogg” James from the SmackDown creative team, Jim Cornette discussed the situation on episode 624 of the “Jim Cornette Experience” podcast. He argued that the current size of the writing staff makes it nearly impossible to judge any individual’s contributions accurately.
Cornette suggested that having ten or fifteen writers on each show leads to a diluted creative vision. He noted that while some members may have strong ideas, they often get “out-politicked” by others in the room. This environment, he claims, makes the “nuts and bolts” of the storytelling more complicated than necessary.
“The fact that they have 10 or 15 of these writers apparently on each show means that you can’t judge anybody on this creative team by what the f****** creative is,” Cornette stated. “The only one that fairly gets to be judged as the booker is Triple H because he gets the final decision. But you don’t know what anybody on the team has contributed except when you see it on Unreal.”
The podcast host argued for a much smaller and more focused leadership group. He believes that the major decisions regarding wins, losses, and television formats should be handled by only a few individuals who “live, breathe, and eat” the wrestling business. This would eliminate the need for the excessive number of “producing minions” currently employed by the brand.
“It should be three people. Three f****** people… and there you have it,” Cornette continued. He expressed frustration with the modern reliance on digital devices and the constant scripting of promos that can feel over-produced to the WWE fans.
This critique comes at a pivotal time as the company prepares for WrestleMania 42 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The recent promotion of Alexandra Williams to VP and Lead Writer for Raw indicates that management is continuing to refine its structure. As the road to the desert reaches its final stop, the impact of these creative decisions will be judged by the global audience in the Nevada desert this April.
