David Finlay Explains Choosing AEW Over WWE

The newest addition to the roster is officially clarifying his decision to join All Elite Wrestling. David Finlay, who was once heavily speculated to join the Stamford-based promotion, recently spoke to WrestleZone about his career pivot. Despite having deep family ties in WWE, the former NJPW standout explained that the choice to join Tony Khan’s company was an “easy” one for him to make.

Finlay made his surprise arrival on the March 4 episode of Dynamite, immediately reuniting with Gabe Kidd and Clark Connors to reform their dominant War Dogs stable. He noted that after eleven years in Japan, he had grown tired of the constant international travel and was ready for a new challenge in the United States. He acknowledged the “rumblings” that he would join his family but ultimately made a financial and professional decision for himself.

“Obviously, I’ve got family ties in another company, and I sat and thought about it. I was like, well, you know, I’ve never made a dime with my brother,” Finlay stated candidly. “I’ve never made a dime with my father. And I’ve made fat stacks of cash with these boys here. So the choice was easy.”

Finlay’s brother, Uriah Connors (known to fans as Brogan Finlay), and his father, Fit Finlay, are currently prominent figures in WWE NXT as part of the Birthright stable. While the family connection is strong, David’s loyalty to the War Dogs and the financial incentives offered by AEW were the primary motivators for his signing. He wasted no time involving himself in the rivalry against Orange Cassidy and Darby Allin.

The War Dogs are officially scheduled for a massive six-man tag team match at this Sunday’s Revolution pay-per-view in Los Angeles. They will face the team of Cassidy, Allin, and the returning Roderick Strong in a physical encounter. Management is reportedly high on Finlay’s leadership within the group and expects the War Dogs to be a primary focus of the tag team and trios divisions throughout the spring season.

As the road to WrestleMania 42 continues for his family members in Orlando, David Finlay is focused on establishing his own legacy in the Nevada-adjacent market. The two-night stadium show at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas remains the ultimate goal for many in the industry, but for now, Finlay is happy to be making “fat stacks” with his chosen brothers in All Elite Wrestling.
