Ask Rey Mysterio to pick one match for the WWE Hall of Fame — and he’ll give you two. Speaking with Adrian Hernandez at a WWE community event in Las Vegas ahead of WrestleMania 42, the legendary luchador offered a pair of choices that each say something profound about who he is and where he came from.
His first pick was his WrestleMania 21 match against Eddie Guerrero on April 3, 2005, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. “I’m a big fan of Eddie and I — WrestleMania 21, WrestleMania Goes Hollywood,” Mysterio said. The match opened the show, with both men serving as reigning WWE Tag Team Champions at the time. Rey won via a hurricanrana reversal, and the two shared a warm handshake that became one of WrestleMania’s most genuine moments. It was Eddie’s final WrestleMania appearance before his passing in November 2005 — and the match has grown more significant with every passing year.
His second pick was just as telling: his very first WWE pay-per-view match, against Kurt Angle at SummerSlam 2002, on a card widely considered one of the greatest SummerSlam events ever assembled. Mysterio had debuted on Raw just weeks earlier and was largely unknown to WWE audiences, yet the crowd immediately embraced him. He lost via ankle lock in around nine minutes, but the performance established him instantly as someone who could compete with anyone. “I’m also a big fan of my first pay-per-view with WWE — SummerSlam. Kurt Angle versus Rey Mysterio,” he said.
Two picks, two opening matches, two legendary events. The pattern reflects a career that has always been built on making the biggest stages feel even bigger — and on leaving an impression long before anyone expected him to.
