WWE Backlash 2026 just got a lot weirder — and a lot fuller. Two new matches were locked in for the May 9 premium live event in Tampa following Friday night’s SmackDown, including a United States Championship bout born out of one of the strangest storylines on the blue brand.
The first new addition pits United States Champion Trick Williams against Sami Zayn, a feud that has somehow centered on a giant gingerbread cookie mascot. On SmackDown, Zayn brought the Gingerbread Man outfit to the ring and grew increasingly furious over what he perceived as disrespect. He took out his frustrations on the mascot itself, ripping the costume to shreds in the middle of the ring. Trick Williams charged out for the save, but in a bizarre twist treated the destroyed outfit as if it were an actual injured person.
The angle escalated backstage when Williams confronted WWE’s medical area and told Zayn he had crossed a line. Later in the broadcast, the announce team confirmed that the Gingerbread Man had been pronounced dead from the attack, with a funeral set to air on next week’s SmackDown. Williams vs. Zayn for the United States Title at Backlash is the on-screen payoff.
The second match added involves Danhausen, who once again outwitted The Miz and Kit Wilson on Friday night. While Danhausen was throwing out merchandise, the duo arrived to confront him, with The Miz initially proposing himself as Danhausen’s mentor. It was a setup — Miz dropped Danhausen with a Skull Crushing Finale and left him laying. Backstage, SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis told Danhausen he could get his receipt at Backlash, provided he could find a tag team partner.
