WWE President Nick Khan’s approval would be the key obstacle to Chad Gable competing in Real American Freestyle, per Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, with the precedent set by Gable Steveson as a cautionary reference point.
Meltzer noted Gable has not competed in amateur wrestling in 14 years and that the most likely scenario would pitch him against an influencer. He said it would ultimately come down to money, noting RAF has been spending on international signings and UFC fighters. However, Meltzer said the bigger question is whether Khan would permit Gable to compete — citing Steveson being blocked from competing in the last Olympics and his third NCAA title as examples of WWE restricting crossover athletic activity.
Meltzer also said the belief is that RAF’s ultimate purpose is to generate enough buzz for TKO or another buyer to acquire the promotion, creating an exit for its founders.
Eric Bischoff had previously said conversations with Gable about an RAF appearance were “relatively serious.”
