Kaitlyn has revealed she walked back through the curtain expecting to be fired after accidentally winning a number one contender’s battle royal for the Divas Championship in 2012 — only to find Vince McMahon laughing hysterically.
Speaking on Rewind Recap Relive, Kaitlyn described the sequence of events during the August 20, 2012 Raw.
“The match happens. I was supposed to clothesline her over the top rope. She was going to slip out, hang on, pull me out, eliminate me. Boom. She’s number one contender. I clotheslined her and the physics were off, and she didn’t go all the way over. So we set back up. We got back into the position, hit the ropes. I closed under as hard as I could because I didn’t want that to happen again.”
The second attempt sent Eve Torres over and made Kaitlyn the unintended number one contender.
“I legit thought that when I walked back through the curtain that I was going to be fired. I walked back and Vince is laughing hysterically. I was like, ‘Is it an evil laugh, or…?'”
She noted Layla’s reaction at ringside was entirely genuine — Layla was sitting with the title and was clearly unhappy. Kaitlyn went on to win the Divas Championship from Eve Torres in January 2013, holding it for 152 days.
