As CM Punk prepares for the release of his new vampire horror film Night Patrol, the World Heavyweight Champion is reflecting on the path paved by those who came before him. In a recent interview with ComicBook, Punk discussed his acting ambitions and took time to praise two of his greatest rivals, John Cena and Dave Bautista, for their success in Hollywood.
Punk credited both men with shattering the long-held stigma that professional wrestlers can only play one type of character on screen. He noted Cena’s comedic timing and Bautista’s dramatic range as key factors in changing public perception.
“I think the world finds out what we all knew. John Cena is incredibly funny when he wants or needs to be. Dave Bautista is very stoic and serious when he wants to be… Those are the two that jump off the page. But the world doesn’t know, because I think there’s a generalization about ‘big dumb pro wrestlers,’ just like there’s probably a generalization about ‘comic books are silly’ or ‘horror movies aren’t serious.’ Those are just stereotypes that you’ve got to chip through.”
Punk specifically highlighted his frustration when critics act surprised by Bautista’s acting chops. Having shared locker rooms and road trips with him for years, Punk emphasized that the talent was always there, even if the wider world is just now catching up.
“I almost kind of get mad when I hear people talk about Dave, like ‘Oh wow, he’s actually a really good serious actor.’ I’m like ‘Hey, that’s my friend, I always knew he could do that.’”
