The wrestling world was buzzing after TNA X-Division Champion Leon Slater answered Carmelo Hayes’ open challenge on the January 16 episode of SmackDown. The 21-year-old phenom received a hero’s welcome at London’s OVO Arena Wembley, putting on a dazzling performance despite coming up short. While fans speculated about a major talent trade or a permanent jump, the reality behind the appearance is far more circumstantial.
According to Fightful Select, Slater’s cameo was the result of logistical headaches rather than a planned crossover. Slater was originally booked for TNA’s Genesis pay-per-view and their TV tapings this week. However, visa issues prevented him from traveling to the United States. Since Slater was stuck in his home country of England while WWE was in town for their European tour, TNA officials granted WWE permission to use him for the night.
“Since Slater was already home in England, TNA granted WWE permission to use him for the SmackDown taping… Sources confirmed that the situation was less about a formal exchange and more about TNA making the best of an unexpected circumstance.”
Despite the excitement, reports confirm that Slater remains under contract with TNA through most of 2026. TNA officials are optimistic that his visa issues will be resolved shortly, meaning this was likely a one-off showcase rather than the start of a continued WWE run. Nevertheless, for one night in London, the “Youngest in Charge” proved he belongs on the biggest stage.
