Cody Rhodes has teased a darker, more aggressive persona in recent weeks—specifically following his WWE Championship loss to Drew McIntyre and rumors of a backstage attack on Jacob Fatu—but fans should not expect a full-blown heel turn anytime soon. According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the company has no plans to turn Rhodes until it feels completely right. Furthermore, officials reportedly have “no desire” to mess with his merchandise numbers, which remain incredibly strong as the top babyface.
The report also highlights a significant change in the creative dynamic compared to last year. On the “Road to WrestleMania” in 2025, The Rock was heavily involved and reportedly pitched a Rhodes heel turn before plans pivoted to John Cena. This time, however, The Rock is reportedly “nowhere to be seen” in creative discussions, and there is zero talk of forcing the “American Nightmare” to embrace his villainous side during this cycle.
