With Roman Reigns vs. CM Punk set for Night Two, the main event for the first night of WrestleMania 42 is coming into focus. According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the current plan is for Drew McIntyre to defend the WWE Championship against Cody Rhodes on the Saturday show. However, Meltzer noted that there is “still a possibility that Jacob Fatu could be added to the contest,” potentially turning it into a Triple Threat match.
The matchup came about after a series of creative shifts. Originally, plans called for Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes vs. CM Punk. After Rollins’ injury, a plan for Bron Breakker to win the Royal Rumble was considered but ultimately rejected. Instead, Drew McIntyre successfully pitched winning the title from Rhodes in their “Three Stages of Hell” match to keep his character strong.
Paul “Triple H” Levesque reportedly sided with the talent, agreeing that revisiting a Rhodes vs. Reigns match for a third consecutive year felt stale. “His feeling is that the direction felt predictable and that Rhodes vs. Reigns had already headlined two WrestleMania shows,” Meltzer wrote. Now, Rhodes is expected to earn his rematch by winning the upcoming Elimination Chamber match, setting the stage for a showdown with “The Scottish Warrior” in Las Vegas.
