A massive dream match appears to be on the books for WrestleMania 42. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Becky Lynch is currently scheduled to defend her Women’s Intercontinental Championship against the returning AJ Lee. The report notes that this bout “had been scheduled on the show and at last word was still scheduled.”
Fans may have noticed AJ Lee’s absence from the Royal Rumble, but Dave Meltzer reports this was a calculated decision. “Lee wasn’t in the Rumble, but it would have served no purpose for her to be in it,” he wrote. The logic is that the women’s tag team division currently features the bulk of the star power, including Rhea Ripley, Iyo Sky, Charlotte Flair, Alexa Bliss, Nia Jax, Bayley, and the returning Bella Twins.
With so many top names occupied in tag team storylines, the ranks of credible singles challengers are “very thin.” This necessitated a high-profile matchup for the Intercontinental Title, pitting “The Man” against the pioneer of the women’s revolution in a battle that is sure to captivate fans in Las Vegas.
