CM Punk is currently sitting at the top of the professional wrestling industry as the World Heavyweight Champion. The veteran babyface has enjoyed a career resurgence since making his return to the WWE locker room. However, the nature of the business means that observers are constantly speculating about his eventual departure.
He has made it clear in the past that he is not thinking about walking away from the ring. Now, the champion is going a step further by actively calling out the constant questions. Punk recently sat down for an interview with Metro UK on February 24, 2026, to discuss his current mindset.
During the conversation, he addressed the topic of hanging up his boots. He had previously stated on the No-Contest Wrestling podcast that he does not see retirement happening anytime soon. This time around, he admitted that he is growing completely tired of being repeatedly asked when his career will be over.
Punk pointed to one specific legend in the locker room as a prime example of a double standard. He used Rey Mysterio to illustrate his frustration with the media and the WWE fans.
“Rey a guy that inspires me, because I feel like nobody’s asking him, ‘Oh, hey, when you’re gonna retire?’”
He then contrasted that specific situation with his own daily experience. Punk made it very clear that he wants individuals to stop asking him when he will be done with professional wrestling.
“And I get it every other question, ‘Hey, when are you gonna retire?’ It’s like, well, slow down!”
The Second City Saint explained that he looks at the masked luchador as proof of concept. He believes that longevity in the ring does not need a strict expiration date attached to it.
“Like I look at a guy like Rey and he’s timeless, and he inspires me to put my boots on and keep going.”
The World Heavyweight Champion also made it clear that he is genuinely enjoying this current chapter of his career. He is completely opposed to setting any artificial deadlines for himself. He compared his journey to another famous athlete who competed well past the standard age of retirement.
“I love the fact that I’m back and looking forward to the future,” he said. “Gordie Howe played in the NHL until he was 52, and he’s Mr Hockey.”
In his typical unapologetic fashion, he ended his thoughts with a statement that leaves the door completely open. The top star refuses to box himself into a specific timeframe.
“I try not to put a time limit. I try to never say never anymore, until I’m known as Mr Wrestling.”
At a time when several top stars are officially retired or going on farewell tours, Punk is sending a very clear message. John Cena recently finished his retirement tour, and AJ Styles officially retired at the 2026 Royal Rumble after a match with Gunther. These recent departures have naturally caused WWE fans to look at other veterans.
However, Punk remains focused on the present. He is currently scheduled to defend his World Heavyweight Championship at the upcoming Elimination Chamber premium live event. The broadcast takes place on Saturday, February 28, 2026, from the United Center in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois.
He will put his gold on the line against Finn Balor of The Judgment Day. If he successfully retains his championship, he is expected to face 2026 Royal Rumble winner Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 42. That two-night stadium event is set for April 18 and 19 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
