The creation of All Elite Wrestling fundamentally changed the professional wrestling industry forever. Chris Jericho firmly believes that his specific match with Kenny Omega directly led to the start of the promotion. The veteran competitor recently reflected on the historical significance of that bout.
While talking with interviewer Spencer Matthews, Jericho was asked to name his personal Mount Rushmore of wrestling opponents. He first listed Dean Ambrose, who is now known as Jon Moxley. He then added global icons The Rock and Shawn Michaels to his prestigious list.
For his fourth and final selection, Jericho named Kenny Omega without any hesitation. He stated that their highly publicized match at the Wrestle Kingdom 12 event back in 2018 made international history. The clash between the two Canadian stars generated incredible buzz across the globe.
Jericho detailed exactly how their encounter shifted the momentum of the entire entertainment business.
“We changed the business when we had our match at the Tokyo Dome, which at the time was crazy because nobody ever thought it would happen,” he explained.
He noted the unique connection they shared and the massive financial success the event generated.
“We’re both from the same small town in Canada called Winnipeg, and we pretty much packed the Tokyo Dome. Digital streaming was through the roof for New Japan Pro Wrestling, which then led to Tony Khan seeing and deciding that he could form AEW because there was so much demand for wrestling that was not WWE,” Jericho detailed.
Khan officially founded AEW in 2019, exactly one year after their memorable Wrestle Kingdom match. Both performers immediately joined the new promotion and quickly became top stars on the weekly television programming. Jericho achieved a major milestone by becoming the first-ever AEW World Champion.
His veteran presence helped legitimize the brand during its crucial formative years on a major cable network. He served as a reliable heel champion to anchor the main event scene. However, his current active status with the company is slightly in question.
Recent reports indicate that his contract has been completely frozen by management due to him taking extended time off. While he remains away from the ring, his colleagues are currently preparing for a major pay-per-view broadcast. The locker room is focused on delivering a stellar show.
AEW Revolution is officially scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 15, 2026. The highly expected event will broadcast live from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California. The card features a massive main event where MJF will defend the AEW World Championship against Hangman Page in a Texas Death Match.
