The highly publicized debut of a new character at the recent premium live event has generated a significant amount of discussion. Not everyone within the Stamford-based promotion was entirely supportive of the company signing Danhausen. The controversial arrival took place during the Elimination Chamber broadcast this past Saturday.
At the WWE Elimination Chamber event in Chicago, the mystery crate that had been featured on television for weeks was finally opened. Danhausen was revealed to have been hiding inside the wooden box the entire time. The 35-year-old former Ring of Honor and AEW wrestler made his grand entrance in front of a capacity crowd.
He was accompanied by several dancers, who were also wearing his signature face paint design to match his aesthetic. However, the live crowd inside the United Center reacted quite negatively to the bizarre segment. The comedic babyface presentation did not seem to resonate with the local audience.
The creative direction surrounding his arrival was heavily discussed on the post-Elimination Chamber edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, available at https://www.f4wonline.com. Dave Meltzer reported that there was internal division regarding the decision to hire the performer. He noted that not everyone in the company was on board with bringing him in.
Meltzer offered a very blunt assessment of the television segment and compared it to a notorious moment from the past.
“It was the Gobbledygooker. That’s what it was. They finally managed to do another Gobbledygooker,” Meltzer said.
Co-host Bryan Alvarez pointed out that the performer has a proven track record of finding success. Alvarez noted that Danhausen’s unique act has gotten over with audiences even without much mainstream television exposure. He believes the company has a specific plan for utilizing his unique skill set moving forward.
Alvarez explained how the promotion might choose to deploy him based on his past independent wrestling success.
“The fact is, he goes to all sorts of events and has gotten himself very over with almost zero national television exposure. So I presume that’s going to be his role. They’ll send him all over the place. They’ll market him on television so he’s bigger at those events, and that will be his role, like a WWE ambassador going different places,” Alvarez detailed.
The conversation then shifted back to the backstage politics surrounding his initial contract signing. Meltzer explained that the decision to bring him into the locker room was met with some resistance from certain individuals.
Meltzer elaborated on the differing opinions among the management team.
“People pushed for him. There were people who didn’t want him. It was not a unanimous decision or anything like that. I would guess that the people who didn’t want him are thinking like, ‘Hmm, sure didn’t work out so well this time.’ But time will tell. He’ll get another chance,” Meltzer added.
The creative team will now be tasked with finding a way to integrate him into the weekly programming. The pressure is on to ensure his next appearance yields a much better response from the WWE fans. The locker room is currently shifting its focus toward the upcoming spring stadium shows.
WrestleMania 42 is rapidly approaching on the calendar. The massive two-night event is officially scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 18, and Sunday, April 19, 2026. The roster will travel to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada, to perform on the grandest stage of them all.
