The American Nightmare is set to receive a major title opportunity on this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown. He will challenge the reigning champion, Drew McIntyre, for the Undisputed WWE Championship in a high-stakes main event. This match will have a profound impact on the plans for the Showcase of the Immortals.
If Cody is successful in his quest for the gold, he will move on to defend the championship against Randy Orton. Orton earned his spot by winning the Men’s Elimination Chamber match in Chicago earlier this year. The storyline surrounding the top prize is extremely heated right now and features several major names.
The current landscape also involves Jacob Fatu and McIntyre as they jockey for position on the blue brand. With so many top stars involved, there are numerous possible directions the creative team could take as WrestleMania 42 approaches. Recently, a fan asked WWE analyst Sam Roberts to weigh in on the situation.
On the Notsam Wrestling podcast, Roberts suggested that the company could be setting the stage for a massive character shift. He proposed a scenario where Cody Rhodes could turn heel, potentially targeting his former mentor. This would ignite a deeply personal and heated rivalry over the Undisputed WWE Championship.
“If you want Cody to be the champion going into WrestleMania, you already have a Cody title run. And the idea of putting the title back on Cody for six weeks, and then he loses it again,” Roberts noted.
He believes that a villainous turn for the popular babyface would provide a fresh and interesting dynamic for the audience. It would also allow the challenger to achieve a major historical milestone in the process.
“I think that if Cody is gonna turn, everything that you just said justifies Cody turning. I want to see Randy get to 15,” Roberts added, referring to Orton’s potential 15th world title win.
The analyst is not interested in seeing a repeat of his previous championship run. He wants to see the characters evolve and face new challenges that test their psychological limits.
“I don’t want to see Cody have another run. I want to see this. I don’t want to see that. Well, guess what? That all leads to this,” he explained to the WWE fans.
He believes that a slow-burn heel turn would make for a much more compelling long-term story. This could potentially carry the brand all the way through the summer months and into the next major stadium show.
“And then you can tell this story of Cody being a villain, and maybe it takes Randy until SummerSlam to get that title from Cody Rhodes,” Roberts concluded.
Whether this massive character shift actually occurs remains to be seen in the coming weeks. The roster is currently focused on the road to WrestleMania 42, which takes place on April 18 and 19 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The event will also feature major clashes like AJ Lee defending her Women’s Intercontinental Championship and Rhea Ripley facing off against Jade Cargill. The championship landscape is about to experience a period of intense volatility as the grandest stage of them all draws near.
