Any speculation about Johnny Gargano’s future in WWE can be put to rest. On the latest Fightful Debunkathon, Fightful Select confirmed that Gargano is “firmly under contract” with the company.
Gargano has been a consistent presence on WWE television in recent weeks, most recently issuing an open challenge on Raw that was answered by Oba Femi, who proceeded to squash him convincingly.
His on-screen character has been in a state of emotional turmoil since the departure of longtime friend and tag team partner Tommaso Ciampa, who left WWE for AEW in January. The storyline leans into that real-life dynamic, depicting Gargano as a man who has lost his sense of direction and purpose — appearing lost and depressed week after week.
The Motor City Machine Guns’ Alex Shelley has also been incorporated into the story, attempting to help Gargano through his struggles — a dynamic that has created friction with Shelley’s own partner, Chris Sabin. Despite the bleak presentation of the character, Gargano’s continued weekly appearances and confirmed contract status suggest WWE has significant plans for his future, even if the current chapter is a difficult one for Johnny Wrestling.
