Bruce Prichard addressed the historical tension between WWE creative and its fanbase regarding top babyfaces during the latest episode of Something to Wrestle With. Speaking with Conrad Thompson, the longtime executive discussed the company’s philosophy on pushing back against negative crowd reactions, specifically citing the careers of John Cena and Roman Reigns as primary examples.
Reflecting on the 2006 Royal Rumble, where backlash toward John Cena was intensifying, Prichard explained that internal metrics told a different story than the live audience response. “You had to ignore it because that was not someplace Vince was willing to go,” Prichard said. “When you look at John Cena, whether the loud male boos were drowning out everything else, the families, the merchandise sales, the kids, and the money were saying otherwise.”
Prichard drew a direct parallel to Roman Reigns’ polarizing run as a babyface, noting that the company “never wavered” in their belief that Reigns was the future of the industry. “Those are the two examples I always use… Roman Reigns is the biggest star they have and will be the biggest star.” He also noted the irony of fan fickleness, stating, “As soon as we stopped shoving Cena down their throat, then it was, ‘Oh my God, you’re not listening to the people.’” Prichard added that Randy Orton also fits into this category of stars who succeeded despite resistance.
