Christy Hemme Clears Up Rumor Regarding AJ Styles And Her Career-Ending Injury

For years, a rumor has circulated within the wrestling community suggesting that AJ Styles was responsible for the injury that ended Christy Hemme’s in-ring career during a training session. Hemme, the inaugural WWE Diva Search winner who later transitioned to TNA Wrestling, recently sat down to set the record straight once and for all.

During an interview with SoCal Val on The Velvet Ropes, the 45-year-old addressed the long-standing rumor for the first time, definitively stating that it was false. Hemme revealed that the actual career-ending injury occurred during a match against the devastating Awesome Kong. “I remember I was in a match with Kong. I got thrown into the turnbuckle and going numb from the neck down,” Hemme recalled. She described experiencing the sensation twice during the match, realizing the severity of the situation.

Upon returning backstage, Hemme immediately sought medical attention. An MRI revealed two protrusions sitting on her spine. “You can’t wrestle with that. Like that’s the kind of thing where if I had been thrown a little harder… it could have severed my spine and I’d be paralyzed. So I had to stop completely,” she explained. She made sure to note that the injury was not Kong’s fault, highlighting the inherent risks of the profession.

Hemme expressed confusion over how the dramatic reality of her injury morphed into a rumor about a training accident with Styles. “I don’t know why we undramatized that story and made it a training story,” she said. She also shared Styles’ reaction to the persistent rumor, noting his frustration with being unfairly blamed. “Poor AJ. He’s like, ‘Why do I have to be the one who was training you and ending your career?’”
