CM Punk Addresses His Career’s Final Chapter: “Everybody Stop Asking Me, Stop Freaking Out”

CM Punk has acknowledged that he is moving toward the final chapter of his in-ring career — while making absolutely clear that anyone expecting an imminent retirement announcement is going to be waiting for a while. Speaking with SHAK Wrestling ahead of WrestleMania 42, Punk was asked about what it means to be on the cover of WWE 2K26 relative to his appearance on the WWE 2K13 cover, and used the question to reflect on where he sits in the arc of a career that has spanned nearly three decades.

“I think in Showcase with CM Punk, it encompasses my entire career. The beginning, the middle, and we’re obviously creeping towards ‘the end.’ Not any time soon. Everybody stop asking me, stop freaking out. But to me it just solidifies the consistency I’ve had over my career — as a top talent, as a huge draw, as somebody with great hair,” Punk said.

The self-awareness in the response is characteristic of a performer who has always understood his own place in the broader wrestling narrative. The recent retirements of John Cena and AJ Styles have naturally brought retirement conversations into sharper focus for performers of Punk’s generation, but at 47 years old and currently holding the WWE World Heavyweight Championship heading into WrestleMania 42, Punk is operating at a level that makes the end feel far less imminent than the question implies.

CM Punk’s WrestleMania 42 World Heavyweight Championship Defense Against Roman Reigns Keeps Him at the Top of WWE

Punk defends the World Heavyweight Championship against Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 42 on April 18 and 19 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas — a match that represents one of the most significant championship bouts of his second WWE run. The fact that he is main eventing the biggest show of the year at 47 while discussing the eventual end of his career rather than its current reality says everything about the kind of shape and creative relevance he has maintained heading into the Show of Shows. The end may be approaching, but it is clearly still some distance down the road.
