For nearly four decades, Paul Heyman has been the gold standard for managers and advocates in professional wrestling. From guiding the Dangerous Alliance to advocating for Brock Lesnar and serving as the “Wiseman” for Roman Reigns, Heyman’s ability to control a crowd is unmatched. In a new interview with Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, the Hall of Famer pulled back the curtain on his philosophy regarding promos and presentation.
“It’s just reading the room. It’s understanding the audience,” Heyman explained. He emphasized the importance of maintaining credibility by managing expectations. “The whole idea is to under promise and over deliver. In doing so, you just have to read the audience. What is their ability to take in the words that I am thrusting upon them?”
Heyman noted that while he wants the audience to be smarter for listening to him, he refuses to spoon-feed them information. “As I’ve said many times, ‘Google it, bitches, I’m not here to educate you.’ So the education that I bestow upon them with the wisdom that I share, has to be in a manner that is easily accepted.” He used a specific example involving the upcoming video game release to illustrate his point. “Not one that afterwards you have to go… ‘Siri, what did Mr. Heyman mean when he said this? Oh, March 13th, WWE 2K26 video game release date. Oh, that’s what he means!’ I have to do it in a manner that it’s soaks in and when I leave, you go, ‘Wow, I’m a wiser person because listened to Paul Heyman.’”
