Austin Theory Reveals He Went to the ER in His Ring Gear After a Hernia Wouldn’t Go Back In

Austin Theory has detailed the medical emergency that forced him out of WWE for several months — and the story is far more harrowing than fans realized at the time. Speaking on The Mark Hoke Show Pro Wrestling Show, the current WWE World Tag Team Champion explained that he had been manually repositioning a hernia after matches for an extended period before a Main Event taping in July 2025 finally brought everything to a head.

“I was actually wrestling with a hernia for a very long time, and as gross as it is, I was having to pop it back in after certain matches. I had a match on Main Event, and it would not go back in. So that night, I went to the emergency room, and it blew my mind because I was like, wow, I just had my gear on, and I went out there and I wrestled and now I’m in the E.R.,” Theory said.

Austin Theory Says His Contract Was Also Expiring During His Hernia Crisis Making It One of the Lowest Points of His Career

The physical crisis was compounded by circumstances that extended well beyond the medical situation itself. Theory’s WWE contract was also coming up for renewal at the same time, layering professional uncertainty on top of a genuine health emergency. “My contract was actually coming up so, a lot of things were hitting me personally — and that’s kind of one of those things, that’s a low point in your life where you get really rocked. Those points, you either stay down or you pick yourself up and you become a version of yourself that’s always been in you but it takes you to that next level,” he said.

Theory used the adversity as motivation. He returned to WWE as the masked individual assisting The Vision faction, first appearing at the men’s WarGames match at Survivor Series before being unmasked on Raw weeks later. His comeback culminated in arguably the biggest moment of his career on April 7 at Madison Square Garden, where he and Logan Paul defeated The Usos to capture the WWE World Tag Team Championships — with an inadvertent assist from IShowSpeed helping seal the victory. The arc from emergency room in wrestling gear to tag team champion at the world’s most famous arena is one of the more dramatic career turnaround stories in recent WWE history.
